Sunrise Shack x Common Room Roasters: Built on Passion, Fueled by Coffee

What started as a dream between brothers and close friends has grown into an iconic name across Oahu—bringing sunshine, good vibes, and quality coffee to locals and visitors alike. Born and raised in Hawaii, the Smith Brothers (Alex, Travis, & Koa) and Koa Rothman took inspiration from the island’s deep-rooted mentality of health, community, and positivity, leading to the creation of Sunrise Shack.

The first shack—an 8x8 roadside right on Sunset Beach—quickly became a destination, drawing people from all over. Their bulletproof coffees and smoothies set them apart, offering a fresh, health-focused take on morning rituals. But Sunrise Shack was never just about what they served—it was about the experience, the culture, and the connection.

The Smith Brothers and Rothman grew up in the ocean, making a name for themselves in surfing and bodyboarding, earning worldwide respect in the surf community. That same passion fuels everything they do at Sunrise Shack—creating a space that embodies island life, where locals and travelers alike come together over great coffee and real conversation.

From that first tiny shack, the Sunrise Shack team has expanded into a full-scale operation with six locations across Oahu, from Sunset Beach to their newest spot at Twin Fin. They’ve set a new standard for what it means to blend passion, quality, and community—proving that big things can come from small beginnings.

At Common Room Roasters, we’ve been proud to work alongside Sunrise Shack for over seven years, curating a coffee program that reflects their energy and ethos while maintaining the same level of expertise and craftsmanship we bring to every partnership. Their bulletproof coffee program has become a menu staple, built around a custom-sourced Organic Peru single origin that pairs seamlessly with their smoothies. More recently, we’ve partnered with their team to launch their espresso program at Twin Fin, a project that has already seen incredible success.
